A Firmer Lilypad On Which To Land

Dear Fellow Toad-Gamers,

I need to find the right collective name to use for you all, Toad-Gamites, Toad-Gamerators, Toad-Gamerians. Just plain Toads may have been a bit too casual, let's stick with the Toad-Gamers for now.

And thank you all for the kind words of welcome, I'm excited to be here and I'm excited to hear your ideas and encouragements. Just one point of order, we haven't edited the comments at all. You're seeing it, warts and all (sorry). We've gotten a lot of direct emails messages in addition to the forum and the blog. That's fine, too. If you want to make a point offline without incurring the wrath of your fellow gamers, that's fine.

Please keep the comments coming and I'll keep the communications flowing your way as well.

That being said, let's get back to the matter at hand. So if we're not going to have advertising, it doesn't take a Rhodes scholar to make the leap to what we are going to do. Yes, Virginia, we're moving TG to a pay site.

Now before you break out the torches and pitchforks, hear me out. We're looking at what we consider to be a very modest fee to be a full-fledged member of TG. We snapped some beads on the ol' abacus and the total, per day, is around 15 cents. Yes, that's right race fans, spare change you might not bend over to pick up if you were in a hurry. One thin dime and one slightly fatter nickel (big bones), probably living by the thousands in the plaid couch in the basement rec room. Skip one Mocha Skim De-Caf Sumatran Double-Shot No Foam Latte with Sustainable Farming Cinnamon and you've probably fixed your TG wagon for that month and then some.

Now, of course, we're not going to pass the collection plate daily. We're gonna need a little up front action from you guys. And so we don't waste anyone's time or give the VISA folks too much in fees, the memberships will be renewed annually. Just think, NPR has pledge drives twice a year and we're only throwing ours once. Half the hassle with infinitely more fun.

So that's about it for this installment of the TG blog. To keep Madison Avenue off of our collective backs, we're switching to a pay site. The best price will be for an annual renewal of about $48, which is $4/month, $.15 per day, 6-tenths of a cent per hour... Well, you get the picture. Until next time,

Peace,
Lin

I hear ya..the problem is that we can't afford to do it for free either.. I know Dan and I have spent thousands over the years because we love what we do. Out of the thousands and thousands that play the site daily only a handful have donated..we can't keep the site going on that.. As we said before..it is either shut down the site or take it to the next level.

Our goal is to make the cost very, very reasonable and give our players more features too. Plus the prizes will be BIGGER..

You'll also be able to have a limited portion of the site for free....

Exciting things to come!!!

Well I paid a subsription to a site I thought was going to be my second home online (after Toadgames) then lost interest 3 months into a paid year. So I'd be more than happy to pay a yearly sub to a site I have been associated with for a number of years without losing interest.
Long live Toadgames

Just an add on to my last comment.. do we have a time frame for when this may happen (glances at the exchange rate and sees that the Aussie dollar is strong against the greenback at the moment AND the bank account looks healthy lol)

I don't understand the "I can't afford to pay thing" I mean I do, but............nothing about the internet or computers is free....

A fast connection is quite expensive each month, a decent computer to keep up with all website changes absolutley isnt cheap...

The amount the guys speak of here is minimal.........The only I would say or ask........maybe the pymnts could me made quarterly for those struggling to find the $48 in one hit?

I understand the need to change to a paying site. My only questions is that my husband, my mother and I all play, will it be $48.00 a year for each of us or for our household? Thank you for your work in making it a quality site.

We are working on this one for you! Also, the $48 per year is the HIGHEST we will charge. We are working out options for bringing the cost down.

Yesterday Good Morning America showed a lady who was addicted to on line games. They showed the site she plays (or one of them) and I checked out the rates.. they were $4.95 a month, $12.95 a quarter and $29.95 a year. Will you have a similar structure with it costing less if we sign up for a full year?

Another question... for those of us who don't have PayPal and don't buy things on line.. will we be able to pay our fees by check?

Yes and yes! :-)

Maybe you could give a(quarterly?) membership as a prize for a random drawing or winning a certain contest - it would make the prize really worth somethng.

Or when you implement the tokens - maybe they could be traded in for membership after reaching a certain amount, or used to buy entries in a random drawing for membership, kinda like buying lottery tickets.

You can have some free games for those who can't or don't want to pay, then have others for members who pay. Maybe even a few lowkey ads, kinda like the ones you have now, only on the free games.

Would also like to see the Chat area available for all the games, not just the multi-player games.

For those of us whose eyesight isn't as great as it used to be - it would be wonderful if you could make the game windows a bit bigger - especially make the cards bigger in the solitaire games - it can be hard to tell your spades from your clubs on partially hidden cards.

It would be nice to give the games different themes - different backgrounds or colors or seasons or characters- just to make them more interesting.

I think you're going to need a much bigger server to keep track of all the new stuff!

Thanks for a great site! :)
